What is Rolling Torque?

Rolling torque is a specification most commonly used to set proper bearing preload. Understanding rolling torque in automotive applications is critical for technicians because it directly impacts both assembly integrity and operational longevity.

Drivetrain Setup: Getting the Preload Right

In axles and transmissions, rolling torque is synonymous with turning torque, dynamic torque, or rotational drag. When measuring rotational drag in a differential, you are measuring the pinion bearing preload. This measurement ensures the bearings are seated with the exact amount of pressure required to eliminate axial play and prevent shaft deflection under load.

Before the ATECH Advanced, dial and fixed-beam style torque wrenches were required to measure dynamic torque, as standard split-beam, or “click,” style torque wrenches only measure static torque values. The new ATECH Advanced now incorporates all styles of torque wrenches into one tool.

How to Enable Rolling Torque on Snap-on's ATECH Advanced Torque Wrench

1. Press and hold the enter button until you enter the menu
2. Scroll down to options
3. Hit Enter
4. Scroll to rolling torque
5. Hit Enter
6. Press the left arrow to get back to the measurement screen
7. Press the enter button until “Rolling Torque” is displayed at the top of the screen
